Current “Nevada History” question & answer from Kent’s Newsletter:

Question: Running low on feed and water for his livestock, John C. Fremont was anxiously looking for a large river, which was shown on several maps, when his expedition happened on Pyramid Lake on January 10, 1844.  What large river was he looking for and where did he find it?

Answer: John C. Fremont was looking for the fabled “Buenaventura River” when he happened on Pyramid Lake January 10, 1844. At the time, the fabled Buenaventura River was believed to flow, unimpeded, from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean.  Mr. Freemont learned the river does not exist.
